SHARINGS ON VARIOUS NONDUAL TEACHERS
NATHAN
GILL QUOTE: The allowing of life as it is – rather than
any efforts to be rid of thought or ‘I’, or to become ‘enlightened’ – allows seeking to fall
naturally away. Within the play, all efforts to be rid of ‘I’ merely reinforce identification with it.
You are Consciousness. Whatever Your present appearance, it is already perfect, including any play of
identification as ‘I’, and also any seeking to be rid of ‘I’. Life as the character is simply the
play of appearances in awareness and has no requirement for awakening. There is only already awakeness. What Already Is What is, right now, is perfection – presence has not arisen from the past and is not leading to the future. All appears presently as a play in awareness. The apparently separate individual may be involved with self-improvement, spiritual life or anything else throughout the unfolding of that life. But only the clarity of what You really are undermines the search for awakening or for being anything other than what already is. This communication about clarity has no particular relevance or significance over any other part of the play. It carries no merit and has no point. There is no purpose for You to find Yourself. The Play of Life The whole play has no purpose or point beyond present appearance. It is Your cosmic entertainment. You are Your play. It has no existence separate from You. What has been sought all along is found to be none other than this which is the seeking. The ultimate goal or prize turns out to be what already is. There is nothing and no one to find. There is awareness with no one being aware. . . THE OPEN WAY COMMENT . YES!! Cuts through subtle sense of self that "knows nonduality" and
is "looking" for this clarity. Which is just another arising/appearance. See this clearly and the subtle sense of
self is seen "directly" AS IS. Nothing to debate. And yet, I think as Nathan would
agree, this play of life simply appears to continue with no one controlling it. This is crucial seeing and still...the beat
goes on. And, this direct seeing, which simply happens by no one also, by the way, is a key arising that resolves ALL doubts
and questions in this forum. Read this with clarity and there is freedom/liberation. End of story. Then the play continues... and even appears to be enjoyed moreso. There is a peace when there is no one trying to figure out with back and forth AND/OR the back and forth simply arises for NO ONE. I think the key is, seeing the the subtle sense that there is a someone that is trying to get something which is just a thought arising as the play. THE OPEN WAY...however will add....to then enjoy the play and apparent adventure "as if". Even when that "as if" appears to be the enjoyment of "opening up" "relatively". However, if identification with this play appears to subtly creep in, then we are "apparently" back to the trying to figure out. As what is ultimately true however, so easy and simple just to LOOK and SEE. End of story!!! The preference here actually is to just stay there!! Here...look honestly and SEE!!! It appears that there is an adding on to the simple clarity of Nathan here.... so I urge you to just look simply and honestly at Nathan's statement. That is really all that is. No need to complicate it. The adding on is just part of the appearance that works relatively...with no controller too. And yet it appears to relatively work for some who's attention prefers 'the relative' to have that speak first and create apparent space to "be" relatively without struggling to "see" wholey which can "appear" to create a search for the unattainable (which is not really true) and hence...suffering. ("trying" to see and "be" Nathan's pure expression - the dismantling of the notion that there is a self) So again, openness relatively and openness ultimately is shared. The relative openness shared "here" has reflections of the ultimate dissolution of self and apparently less reinforcement of separation. And the two are seen as appearing in two distinct apparent realms, yet all arises in oneness. Openness ultimately is true liberation however!! And I say GO FOR IT!! If it works for you!! (It arises "as is" anyway whether "you" go for it or not) ...So I share relatively as well....So if there is joy and openness even relatively, then it is good. From there, an openness to direct seeing appears more available. And there is freedom in the apparrent relative seeing if allowed that way not strongly reinforcing the subtle separation there. All that was just shared here... too is just a story arising if seen as is....will instantly show clarity, liberation, ultimate freedom. So to sum up...The apparent "choice" to enjoy relatively seems to have value and yet ultimately is just another appearance in the story of life as there never was one to choose. Heavy identification with the relative part alone, even with freedom as it's goal - can lead to the illusion of separation if "soley identified with" - no matter what the intention for freedom are!. T hat is why when THE OPEN WAY expresses relatively there will always be the perspective of the context of the sharing with a reminder of the ultimate ..shared right behind it. So the heavy identification with the story alone does not lead down and endless searching path for something separate from you. But if choosing appears as the play and appears to allow space to "be" and enjoy with reflections of wholeness and free beingness, then that appearance is a nice appearance, one that can appear nicer than "struggling" to see what this true, seemingly unattainable clarity is!! (After all..it is the disappearance of "YOU" which can "appear" to be scary!! ) That is why you see so relatively few, truly opening as nonduality! And that is why, the relative play is shared here as well. From this relative "loosening" it might appear to be available for a jumping off point. It ALL will appear to happen when it happens anyway and nothing you did in the story actually "did it". But it appears that way and so we enjoy how that plays out!!. (NOTE: The subtle reinforcement of the potential endless search by acknowledging an illusion of relative, is seen here and yet all appears to depend on how sharings are "used" as pointers in the story. The relative DOES assume a separate self and it is shared that even that is an arising for no one. Apparently confusing no doubt!!! So less struggle relatively appears nicer, so we play that, yet if all that arises is not allowed and this is a preference "opposed to another scenario, (key words are "opposed to" then there is inherently a separation there and suffering by comparison. Seems subtle and tricky here. So I wonder if you follow? And yet, by ALL means, please LOOK- SEE CLEARLY and the joy of total liberation is something that cuts through all the relativity, which can be endless searching too, all depending on how the appearance is seen. Again, as usual, IAM not sure this long response is posted here in the appropriate place (It's OK ..I know) and keep saying I will answer simply which is really the true love!! This is a nice place to simply honor and share on the undeniable true clear simplicity of Nathan's sharing!! Yet I feel it "serves" to share with ALL (even relatively so that ALL have value!!! (An apparently satisfying story!) However I will let it be for NOW! Can not control otherwise. It is what it is. How interesting to watch and enjoy this expression knowing it is simply arising out of nothing for/from no one!! It remains to be seen if apparent future sharings are simply direct pointers or embracing openness to all expressions that appear to allow freedom. I have a feeling it will be a mix of both. But moreso as simple clear pointers as clear undeniable seeing. These sharings are for initial perspective on THE OPEN WAY. And to have that available, yet the core of most future sharings are the simple honest looking....much akin to how Nathan shares. The scene is set as well however for ones to enjoy openness relatively now!! Sometimes cutting right through, like NATHAN, which is where it is ultimately at. And other times sharing for relative perspective and space to "be" and freedom in the appearance. So now we can leave that!! As it's own loving relative value of sharing and also get to the core of it ALL!! Sorry to post the comprehensive perspective sharing HERE, but that is just how it unfolded. It is all good. More appropriate to share this in a different area no doubt. Another area for this expression would have been nice (as this can be seen in the context of Nathans sharing as an unnecessary adding on hence apparent sabotage of the simple clarity) as effectiveness here seems to be just to honor Nathans simple clarity. Well...next time!! I prefer that this does not feed debate! This appears to be a wonderful opportunity to see if one "reacts" to try to counter point or see that you are already freedom and no need to prove a point of view!! This long response to the simple clarity, it is a great time to look and see that this is just part of the story that arises for no one. Nice to see if "you" get "hooked" or see it from clarity!!! As clarity, there is no problem with the story either. So this too appears as a test (as if) in the story. Let us see what happens. As my responses from here on, just might be too simple and clear!!!!! And have you wondering...is this the same one sharing. Who knows! It is already perfect!! I for one am not hooked (in the story- no one to be hooked) and am enjoying it as the appearance! I do not believe I will put energy into long back and forth dialogues....just long initial sharing here! Might throw "you" off A moment to have a good look at who is defending or fixing what perhaps! Blessings Be Free Cory . APRIL 2009 KILOBY NEWSLETTER MISHEARING THE MESSAGE The message of non-duality (otherwise called awareness, presence, enlightenment, liberation) gets misheard in various ways. There is the belief that, because all there is, is ‘This,’ then one should just not care at all about anything. The story here is, “What's the point? It’s all happening beyond my control anyway.” The notion is that somehow the realization that this moment is all there is, which is true, somehow lends credibility to the story, “I don’t care.” But “I don’t care” is just another story. It is dualistic, and often carries with it a negative tone, which is resistance to what is. It is another point of view appearing in awareness. Non-dual pointers are not saying you should be more engaged in this moment, nor are they saying you should be less engaged. They are not saying you should care more about what is happening, nor are they saying you should care less about what is happening now. The pointers are pointing to the fact that you are ‘This.’ You are the reality that is happening now. You are not your story. You are not any story appearing in the reality of now including the dualistic stories about how what is happening is good/bad or whether you care/don’t care. What is, is what is. It’s hard to argue with that. Realize that what you are is an awake space from which all these stories appear and disappear. This knowing does not come from the mind. So the moment you think you have it because some wonderful idea or insight has popped into the mind, you don't. Insights can be great. Real eye-openers, so to speak. But you can't "have 'This.'" It is not an idea. It is not any idea. Ideas appear and disappear in what is being pointed to here. Insight is revealed an awake space from of stories. The awake space (i.e., awareness) does not appear and disappear. This knowing of who you really are is realized only through the direct recognition of presence. Presence is that which is awake right now to everything that appears and disappears. TRYING TO OWN AWARENESS With even a glimpse into the seeing that what you are, is this presence, another story can start coming through. This new story is “I am awareness.” Sounds harmless at first. But it’s a subtle trap. The moment one tries to own awareness, separation starts being recreated. Separation is illusory. It isn’t real. The mind is creating it. Shortly after owning (i.e., identifying with) the story “I am awareness,” the mind looks around at the others who don’t realize it. It tells the story of being “above” them. “Those poor fools still stuck in stories." See that the stories, “I am enlightened,” “I am not enlightened,” “I am present,” “I am not present,” and even “I am awareness,” are thoughts appearing and disappearing in what you are—this awake space. The stories, "He is not present" and "she is not enlightened" are just flipsides of the "I am" stories. All appearances in separation--the mirror of dualistic relationship. There is nothing wrong with the word “I” or any other pronoun. It’s a linguistic convenience. Use it, often. However, depending on the circumstances, the “I” thought--if totally believed--is an indicator that a new story has arisen. The “I” thought is like the root of a tree. The stories the “I” tells are like its branches. That's the suffering. Pull the root of the tree up and the branches come with it. That's freedom. To pull the root up, recognize that awareness is your true nature and that all stories appear and disappear from that awareness. What is seen is that the stories are not independent of the awareness. Without awareness the stories cannot appear. This is seeing that the duality between awareness and the stories is also unreal. The mind creates a conceptual division between awareness and appearances in awareness. In reality, there are not two (hence, “non-duality”). In this seeing, even the stories are seen to be at rest, just as the awareness is at rest. Thought is no longer seen as a problem. It no longer has any power over 'you.' Do 'you' see the difference between the story, "I am awareness" and the actual realization of that? Take a moment to just suspend thought, even if only for a second. That which is looking--that awareness--is your true nature. When there is a direct realization of this space, you see that "I am this space" is merely a story coming through the space (when thought returns). Once the mind tries to own the space, turning it into the personal story, "I have it," separation is happening. Don't make a problem out of any of these stories. Don't try to stop thoughts permanently. Just see that they aren't real. They are like little mirages. They come and go. If you look straight at these stories, they disappear. That tells you something about whether they are real. POINTS OF VIEW ABOUT NON-DUALITY This is related to the above topic. There are always better ways or clearer ways to express the inexpressible realization called non-duality. This world of relativity (i.e., how one view may be clearer than another view) should be respected. It’s happening all the time anyway, right? All words are dualistic. Words make sense only in relation to other words. That is how duality works. Don't deny duality. It's apparently happening. Just see it for what it is--thought. Some words or expressions are naturally clearer. Nonetheless, never mistake the words for the truth to which they are pointing. They are pointing to reality as it is happening now. In reality, all there is, is awareness and the appearances (thoughts, emotions, trees, roads, pets, planets) appearing and disappearing in awareness (and even that is a concept). But that concept is pointing to what is always happening. Non-dual pointers are pointing to the direct experience of that reality. Pointers are just appearances. Although there can be a respect for whether one view is clearer than another view, they are all appearances. Look to where they are pointing. The word is never the thing it describes. This is true of all words. The word “orange juice” is not what you drink in the morning. To know this thing “orange juice” is to drink it, let it flow down the throat and digest in the system. That is what it means to know directly that to which the words “orange juice” are pointing. Can you imagine hundreds of people arguing over which are the clearest words to use when pointing to the direct experience of drinking orange juice? Silly, yes? This is what is happening when the mind gets a hold of non-duality. It turns it into a mental philosophy to argue about. Each of the pointers are merely words pointing to a direct experience. The words are appearing and disappearing in that direct recognition. Allow the words to arise, point in the right direction (to the reality of now) and then disappear. Don’t get hung up on any words. But if you do, just notice that. What is noticing is awareness. Getting stuck on certain pointers or ways of expressing 'This' often turns it into a religion. Look to those teachings that are not fundamentalist in nature, the ones that don't demand that 'This' be expressed in only one way. The conflict one often finds around disagreement and insistence on one particular way is an aspect of separation. Separation is illusory. It isn't real. This means that conflict isn't real. It's mind created. It comes from identification with viewpoints, including viewpoints about non-duality. .
